NON-DEGREE SEEKING STUDENTS

Enrollment in the following courses as a non-degree seeking student is allowed prior to full admission.  Upon acceptance into the Master’s program, these courses could apply toward completion of degree requirements needed to complete the Master of Science in Nursing Degree.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Students considered for Full Admission to the Graduate Program in the School of Nursing must meet the following requirements:

A.  Meet admission requirements to Delta State University 

B.  Meet admission requirements to the Delta State University School of Nursing Graduate Program as follows: 

  •       Baccalaureate degree in Nursing with a minimum GPA of 3.00 on upper division courses.
     

  •       A satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Exam or the Miller Analogies Test.
     

  •       A satisfactory score on a nationally recognized, standardized test of verbal skills [e.g. score of 370 or higher on GRE verbal section; score of 3.0 or higher on CAAP].
     

  •       A grade of “C” or better on an introductory course in statistics.
     

  •       At least one year of continuous clinical nursing experience
     

  •       Mississippi license (in good standing) to practice as a Registered Nurse.
     

  •       Three letters of professional/academic reference.
     

  •       Evidence of both professional nursing liability and health insurance.
     

  •       Admission committee may require successful completion of interview and/or on-site writing sample.
     

  •       A grade of “C” or higher on a physical assessment course which include content for both adult and child (applies only to practitioner and educator tracks).
     

  •       A grade of “C” or higher on a graduate level pathophysiology course (applies only to practitioner and educator tracks).
     

  •       Application deadline April 1

 

PURPOSE

The Master of Science in Nursing provides study beyond the Baccalaureate in Nursing.  The role specialties are nurse administrator, adult health educator, and family nurse practitioner.  Clinical specialties are adult and family. 

  • The graduate student in the administrator role completes a minimum of 540 theory and 420 clinical clock hours. 
  • The graduate student in the educator role completes a minimum of 547.5 theory and 570 clinical practice clock hours. 
  • The graduate student in the practitioner role completes a minimum of 502.5 theory and 750 clinical practice clock hours.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Required elective hours are dependent on research project or thesis option and vary from 0-6 hours.

  • Tracks will be offered contingent upon sufficient enrollment according to the Delta State University Graduate Bulletin (p.  51).

  • Elective courses may be appropriately selected from emphasis areas other than that area chosen by the student or from other elective courses offered from time to time in the School of Nursing, as well as appropriate courses from other schools or departments within the University. Electives must be approved by faculty advisor.

  • One semester clinical hour credit requires 4 contact hours in clinical learning per week.  Otherwise, one semester hour is equivalent to one clock hour/week. 

  • All Students must have computer and Internet access.
