2. Flight Team

Delta State University’s “Flying Okra” makes a big impression on some of the best flight schools in the nation.  On May 3, 2008, Delta State traveled to Nashville to compete against some of the best professional flight training schools in the nation. These competing schools included the United States Air Force Academy, Embry Riddle, University of North Dakota, The Ohio State University, Middle Tennessee State University, Florida Institute of Technology, Oklahoma State.

Delta State’s Daniel Hille claimed second in the nation on landings, and Patrick Penson claimed one of the highest honors placing first as the nation's top achievement award for aviation.  Patrick also took third as the Best Certified Flight Instructor. Dustin Ratliff placed 11th overall in Aircraft Preflight. Team Captain Wesley Womble was the “Flying Okras” pick for the outstanding service and team member award. Several other team members took points away from large competing schools.

Delta State proved strong, despite its small numbers on the team. Team members competed against schools that have some of the best technology in the aviation industry today and were able to meet face to face with industry representatives from Cessna, Cirrus, Airnet, Net Jets, and Delta Airlines and several otherson site for the National competition.

Delta State University’s “Flying Okra” hard work and dedication earned them recognition on a National level to some of the most important names in the industry.
