of BIO 330 (Mammalian Physiology I). In-depth study=
of
fundamental mechanisms governing the function of blood cell formation, immu=
ne
function, respiration, digestion, and endocrinology. Students cannot
receive credit from this course if they have taken BIO 231.

BIO 330 (Absolute
requirement)
Credit hours: 4 (Lecture 3 hours,
laboratory 4 hours.)

Instructor’s Responsibilities:
My teaching philosophy is to challenge students to l= earn beyond their expectations and help them develop problem-solving skills thro= ugh independent learning and thinking. &n= bsp; My goal is to do the best possible job of teaching this course. The laboratory sessions have been designed to provide as much hands-on experien= ce as possible. I expect to come to each class well prepared and to clearly communicate information that is relevant to this course. I strongly encoura= ge and welcome classroom discussion about the topics being presented. I am also eager to answer any questions you may have during the lecture or laboratory sessions.

I expect you to come to each lecture and laboratory session with a desire to learn. You are also expected to complete the readi= ng assignments, study the material thoroughly outside of class, and come to cl= ass prepared to ask questions about subjects that are unclear to you. Remember, learning is an active process and requires a significant amount of time and effort!

participations), and a research project.

Exams
There
will be four hourly examinations plus one final examination. Dates of the exams will be announc=
ed at
least one week before the anticipated exam date. Each exam is based on essays and o=
ther
written questions. Questions =
on the
exam are designed not only to evaluate your ability to acquire and recite
information presented in the lectures but also to think critically and solve
problems. At least 50 % of
questions on any given exam will be application questions that require you =
to
use information presented in the lectures to answer them. The last hourly e=
xam
and the final exam are take-home exams worth 100 points each. The University of Mississippi Medic=
al
College policy will be applied on the day of the exam. You are allowed to take only writi=
ng
utensils, a scientific calculator, and a note card with whatever the
information you think is necessary (one side only, blank card will be provi=
ded
by the instructor week prior to the exam) to your chair. Your books, notes, cell phones, and
other electronic devises, as well as backpack and purses must be placed on =
the
tables located in front of the room as you enter the room during the
examination.
Article reviews
Throughout
the course of the semester, you are required to lead discussion on one
scientific literature during the first hour of laboratory sessions. You will be asked to critique scie=
ntific
article. You are also required to participate in the discussion of the revi=
ew
during the presentation. I will try to identify articles presented in
scientific and medical journals that are relevant to the subject being cove=
red
in the lecture and laboratory.
Quizzes:
There
will be a weekly quiz (10 pts per quiz).&n=
bsp;
The questions on the quizzes will come from the review material from
previous courses including BIO 100, current lecture material, and selective
questions on the Medical Collage Admission Test (MCAT) and Nursing program
entrance examination. There w=
ill
not be a quiz on the week of examination.&=
nbsp;
Score of quizzes will be added as extra points to your total score a=
nd
will not be count against the total score.
Research Project
Laboratory
session for this class will be the time for you to conduct actual scientific
investigation rather than completing verification-bases exercises. The project is worth 300
points. The main theme of the
project is “Freshman 15 – Myth or Truth?” The objective of this project is to determine ef=
fects
of consuming cafeteria food on overall health of individual. We will use two animal models (mic=
e and
catfish) to conduct experiments. Your
goal is to develop hypothesis, design experiments to test hypothesis, and d=
raw
conclusions based on your experimental data. You should use what you learned fr=
om the
community engagement project that you did in BIO 330 (Anatomy and Physiolog=
y I)
as basis to develop your ideas. Moreover, we would like to assess w=
hether
choice of food being available on-campus provide enough alternatives for
students to maintain healthy lifestyle.&nb=
sp;
You will be working in groups of four to five. You may use laboratory hours to co=
nduct
literature searches, validation of techniques, data collection, and
discussion. During laboratory
sessions, I will be available to help you with procedures and other issues =
with
experiments. Your grade will =
be
based upon:

must provide the instructor with completed request form and other additional
documents at least three days before the anticipated exam. Only then, you may take the make-up
examination. Other emergencie=

as illness, family emergency, and car problems must be substantiated by wri=
tten
documents. Otherwise, you will
receive ZERO on your missed exams. <=
/span>REGARDLESS OF THE SITUATION, YOU MUST
INFORM THE INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIATELY IF YOU ARE GOING TO MISS EXAMS. ANY TYPE OF EX=
CUSES,
LEGITIMATE OR NOT, WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED 48 HOURS AFTER THE EXAM IS DISTRIBU=

Students
are expected to follow all University Policies. Class attendance will be taken at =

beginning of each class. It i=

and laboratory meetings. Alth=

am not very strict on class attendance as many other instructors are, I WILL NOT TOLERATE TARDINESS! YOU WILL BE MARKED AS LATE ONCE I =
close the door. If you are late for the day =
of the
exam, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO E=
NTER
THE ROOM IF YOU ARE LATE, AND YOU WILL RECEIVE ZERO (0) ON THE EXAM.
Class
attendance will be used as the X-factor on your final grade as follow:
1) Greater than 95 % =3D =
Maximum
3 % added. Most likely one letter grade if on the border line (87 %, 77 %, =

%, etc)
2) 90-94 % =3D Maximum 1.5 % added
3) Below 90 % =3D 0 % added
All
cell phones and other electronic devises such as i-pod
must be turned off and must remain inactive during lecture and laboratory.<=

be asked to leave the room if these devises become activated during lecture=

laboratory. IF YOU LEAVE THE ROOM =

RE-ENTER THE LECTURE. Activation of these devises, as well as departure from the room =
