This course is designed to introduce students to in-= depth study of fundamental mechanisms governing physiological processes in mammal= ian system. This course covers th= e function of neural, muscle, cardiac, and renal function. Students cannot receive credit fro= m this course if they have taken BIO 230.

Instructor’s Responsibilities:
My teaching philosophy is to challenge students to l= earn beyond their expectations and help them develop problem-solving skills thro= ugh independent learning and thinking. &n= bsp; My goal is to do the best possible job of teaching this course. The laboratory sessions have been designed to provide as much hands-on experien= ce as possible. I expect to come to each class well prepared and to clearly communicate information that is relevant to this course. I strongly encoura= ge and welcome classroom discussion about the topics being presented. I am also eager to answer any questions you may have during the lecture or laboratory sessions.

I expect you to come to each lecture and laboratory session with a desire to learn. You are also expected to complete the readi= ng assignments, study the material thoroughly outside of class, and come to cl= ass prepared to ask questions about subjects that are unclear to you. Remember, learning is an active process and requires a significant amount of time and effort!

2. Understand the composition of body fluid and its
maintenance
3. Understand the process of generation and propaga=
tion
of action potential
4. Understand the role of action potential in muscle
contraction and nerve impulse transmission
5. Explain the process of skeletal and smooth muscle
contraction
6. Understand the role of autonomic nervous system =
on
regulation of organ function
7. Understand structures involved in digestion and
absorption of nutrient and physiological process involved
8. Understand the basics of endocrine system

Exams
There
will be three hourly examinations plus one final examination. Dates of the exams are indicated o=
n the
syllabus. Each exam is based =
on essays
and other written questions. =
Final
exam is another hourly test and worth 100 points. When the exam is in the closed book
format, the University of Mississippi Medical College policy will be applie=
d on
the day of the exam. You are
allowed to take only writing utensils and a scientific calculator to your
chair. Your books, notes, cell
phones, and other electronic devises, as well as backpack and purses must be
placed on the tables located in front of the room as you enter the room dur=
ing
the examination. If you need =
to
dispute your exam scores because of mistake(s) on my grading such as marking
right answer as wrong or accidentally counting the points wrong, you must b=
ring
the exam back with the written notice that clearly states the mistake and p=
roof
for the right answer from your textbook and lecture notes (only proof allow=
ed)
within seven (7) days after the exam is returned to you.
Literature review
There
will be a literature review during the semester worth 100 pts. This review focuses on physiologic=
al
consequences of childhood obesity on quality of adult life. You will be working on groups of
four. Keep in mind that this =
is the
starting point for the research project that you will be conducting in
Mammalian Physiology II next semester so you need to begin focus on develop=
ing
questions and how you want to answer them through the process of writing th=
is
review.
Case Studies
There
will be four case studies throughout this course. You will be asked to make diagnosi=
s of
the condition, identification of causes, and possible treatment options bas=
ed
on the conditions presented in each case.&=
nbsp;
I will try to identify actual cases presented in scientific and medi=
cal
journals that are relevant to the subject being covered in the lecture and
laboratory.
Quizzes:
There
will be two laboratory quizzes (50 pts per quiz) during the semester. There will not be a quiz on the we=
ek of
examination.
Based upon hourly examinations (4), writing assignment (4 per
semester), a literature review, and weekly quizzes.
Hourly
exams: 400 pts (100 pts per exam)
Literature
review: 100 pts
Case
study: 200 pts (50 pts per, 4 per semester)

Grading Scale: >90 % =3D A, 80-8=

will be NO MAKE-UP EXAMS, PRACTICA=

QUIZZES. If
you know that you are going to miss the class because of University-sanctio=
ned
events (Athletics, musical performances, etc), you MUST NOTIFY THE INTSRUCTOR AT LEAST ONE WEEK (5 WORKING DAYS) PRIOR=
TO THE
DAY OF EXAMINATION with written
documentation (notes from the coach, band director, etc). Only then, you may take the make-up
examination and quizzes. I wi=
ll try
to schedule lab practical around so that you will not have to miss them. Ot=
her
emergencies such as illness, family emergency, and car problems must be
substantiated by written documents.
Otherwise, you will receive ZERO on your missed exams, practical, and
quizzes. REGARDLESS OF THE SITUATION, YOU MUST INFORM THE INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIA=
TELY
IF YOU ARE GOING TO MISS EXAMS. ANY TYPE OF EXCUSES, LEGITIMATE OR NOT, WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED =

HOURS AFTER THE EXAM IS DISTRIBUTED.
Students are expected to follow all University Policies. Class attendance will be taken at = the beginning of each class. It i= s YOUR responsibility to attend all= class and laboratory meetings. Alth= ough I am not very strict on class attendance as many other instructors are, I WILL NOT TOLERATE TARDINESS! YOU WILL BE MARKED AS LATE ONCE I = close the door. The door in Caylor 147 automatically locks itself and you will not be allowed to enter. If you= are late for the day of the exam, YOU = WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE ROOM IF YOU ARE LATE, AND YOU WILL RECEIVE ZERO= (0) ON THE EXAM.
