Course Description

C= ontinuation of BIO 230 (Anatomy and Physiology I).  = Covers fundamental mechanisms governing the function of blood cell formation, immu= ne function, respiration, digestion, and endocrinology.  Laboratory exercises focus on sele= ctive physiological function. Students cannot receive credit from this course if = they have taken BIO 331.

 

Prerequisites: = BIO 230 (Absolute requirement) or equilibrant

 

Credit hours: 4 (Lecture 3 hours, laboratory 2 hours.)

 

Teaching philosophy and Instructor’s Responsibilities:

My teaching philosophy is to challenge students to l= earn beyond their expectations and help them develop problem-solving skills thro= ugh independent learning and thinking. &n= bsp; My goal is to do the best possible job of teaching this course. The laboratory sessions have been designed to provide as much hands-on experien= ce as possible. I expect to come to each class well prepared and to clearly communicate information that is relevant to this course. I strongly encoura= ge and welcome classroom discussion about the topics being presented. I am also eager to answer any questions you may have during the lecture or laboratory= sessions.

 

 

 

 

Student’s Responsibilities:

I expect you to come to each lecture and laboratory session with a desire to learn. You are also expected to complete the readi= ng assignments, study the material thoroughly outside of class, and come to cl= ass prepared to ask questions about subjects that are unclear to you. Remember, learning is an active process and requires a significant amount of time and effort!

 

Grading

Based upon hourly examinations (5), Case studies (4 per semester), a Community Engagement project, and weekly quizzes.

 

Hourly exams: 500 pts (100 pts per exam)

Laboratory Practical: 200 pts (50 pts per, 4 per semester)

Community Engagement Project: 200 pts

Quizzes: 100 pts

Assignments: 100

 

Total =3D 1000 pts

 

Grading Scale: >90 % =3D A, 80-8= 9 % =3D B, 70-79 % =3D C, 60-69 % =3D D, <60 % =3D F

 

Exams

There will be four hourly examinations plus one final examination.  Dates of the exams will be announc= ed at least one week before the anticipated exam date.  Each exam consists of multiple choice-type questions and written questions.  Questions on the exam are designed= not only to evaluate your ability to acquire and recite information presented in the lectures but also to think critically and solve problems.  At least 50 % of questions on any = given exam will be application questions that require you to use information presented in the lectures to answer them.&= nbsp; Final exam is another hourly test and worth 100 points.  The University of Mississippi Medi= cal College policy will be applied on the day of the exam.  You are allowed to take only writi= ng utensils and a scientific calculator to your chair.  Your books, notes, cell phones, and other electronic devises, as well as backpack and purses must be placed on = the tables located in front of the room as you enter the room during the examination. 

 

Case Studies

There will be four case studies throughout this course.  You will be asked to make diagnosi= s of the condition, identification of causes, and possible treatment options bas= ed on the conditions presented in each case.&= nbsp; I will try to identify actual cases presented in scientific and medi= cal journals that are relevant to the subject being covered in the lecture and laboratory.   =

 

Quizzes:

There will be a weekly open-book, open-note quiz (10 pts per quiz).  The questions on the quizzes will = come from the review material from previous courses including BIO 100, current lecture material, and selective questions on the Medical Collage Admission = Test (MCAT) and Nursing program entrance examination.  There will not be a quiz on the we= ek of examination.

 

 

Community Engagement P= roject

 

There will be a community engagement project that is worth 200 points.  The objective of this project is to educate Delta State University students= and others about and those who commute about relationship between eating habits= and blood level of cholesterol and glucose and how they affect person’s health.  Your goal is to intro= duce your audience (your choice) about healthy eating habits and life style by u= sing what you learned from the community engagement project that you did in BIO = 230 (Anatomy and Physiology I).  <= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  Moreover, we would like to as= sess whether choice of food being available on-campus provide enough alternatives for students to maintain healthy lifestyle.  Data collected in this study will = be analyzed to determine whether students at Delta State University are awar= e of their eating habits and their effects on their blood cholesterol level.

 

Make-up exams and quiz= zes:

There will be NO MAKE-UP EXAMS OR QUIZZE= S.  If you know that you are going to = miss the exam class, you must do the following:

 

= 1)&n= bsp;     Complete re= quest for changing examination date form (available in Walters 150)

2)      Have the fo= rm signed by Dean of College of Arts and Sciences (Mr. Collier Parker, Kethley 113) and Chairman of the Division of Biological and Physical Sciences (Dr, = Barry Campbell, Walters 150)=

3)      In addition, have the form signed by= the Chairperson of the respective department (Nursing: Dr. Carlson, Family and Consumer Sciences: Dr. Jan Haynes, Athletic Training: Dr. Tim Colbert) if y= ou are not in the science program.

= 4)&n= bsp;     Obtain the note from the co= ach, band director, etc. if you are going to miss the exam due to the University-sanctioned events.

 

You must provide the instructor with completed request form and other additional documents at least three days before the anticipated exam.  Only then, you may take the make-up examination.  Other emergencie= s such as illness, family emergency, and car problems must be substantiated by wri= tten documents.  Otherwise, you will receive ZERO on your missed exams.  <= /span>REGARDLESS OF THE SITUATION, YOU MUST INFORM THE INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIATELY IF YOU ARE GOING TO MISS EXAMS.  ANY TYPE OF EX= CUSES, LEGITIMATE OR NOT, WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED 48 HOURS AFTER THE EXAM IS DISTRIBU= TED. 

 

Class Attendance and Tardiness=

Students are expected to follow all University Policies.  Class attendance will be taken at = the beginning of each class.  It i= s YOUR responsibility to attend all= class and laboratory meetings.  Alth= ough I am not very strict on class attendance as many other instructors are, I WILL NOT TOLERATE TARDINESS!  YOU WILL BE MARKED AS LATE ONCE I = close the door.   If you are late for the day = of the exam, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO E= NTER THE ROOM IF YOU ARE LATE, AND YOU WILL RECEIVE ZERO (0) ON THE EXAM.  

 

 

Class attendance will be used as the X-factor on your final grade as follow:=

 

1)      Greater than 95 % =3D = Maximum 3 % added. Most likely one letter grade if on the border line (87 %, 77 %, = 67 %, etc)

2)      90-94 % =3D Maximum 1.5 % added

3)      Below 90 % =3D 0 % added

 

Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devises

All cell phones and other electronic devises such as i-pod must be turned off and must remain inactive during lecture and laboratory.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  Please turn them off before enteri= ng the classroom or laboratory.  You = will be asked to leave the room if these devises become activated during lecture= and laboratory. IF YOU LEAVE THE ROOM = TO ANSWER YOUR CELL PHONE, YOU WILL BE MARKED AS ABSENT AND WILL NOT BE ALLOWE= D TO RE-ENTER THE LECTURE.  Activation of these devises, as well as departure from the room = to answer the phone, during examination will result in automatic “F̶= 1; on the exam.

 

Extra Credits:

 

I will provide some opportunities for you to earn extra credits (up to 45 poi= nts, which is half of the letter grade).  I often give assignments and homeworks to replace quizzes or supplement your exam scores.  You should also keep all the recor= d from each lab exercise meticulously= in your notes (separat= e from your lecture notes).  You may = turn in your laboratory notes at the end of semester for extra credit.&nbs= p; However, YOU MUST HAVE A PASSING GRADE IN ORDER TO RECEIVE EXTRA CREDITS FROM THE LABORATORY NOTES.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  FURTHERMORE, SLOPPY LAB NOTES WILL= NOT BE COUNTED FOR EXTRA CREDITS.

First offense: Automatically receive Zero (0) on the exam and assignment. Your ac= tion will be reported to the chairperson of the Division of Biological and Physi= cal Sciences and chairperson of your academic program (if not science)
