Jackson Roadmap for Health Equity Project

The Jackson Roadmap to Health Equity Project (JRHEP) seeks to achieve health equity in Jackson by advocating for, creating, and sustaining positive social change within those community institutions that influence peoples' everyday lives. Through effective community/professional partnerships, we will work with these institutions to evolve them to effectively support – and never inhibit – the community's efforts to be healthy.

JRHEP involves four community/organizational partnership projects to stimulate social, environmental, and institutional change:

1. Lean Back addresses school-based institutional practices and strengthens parent advocacy skills regarding nutrition and physical fitness as it affects the risk of obesity throughout one’s lifetime.   3. Grassroots Policymaking for Environmental Justice is a community-based project that addresses environmental hazards in neighborhoods by organizing target communities to 1) conduct a community assessment, 2) map the hazards, 3) conduct a health impact assessment, and then 4) develop a systematic plan for advocacy to address the identified hazards.

2. Project Heart modifies the American Heart Association’s institutional approach to community health education related to health disparities by 1) demonstrating the benefits of authentic community engagement at the developmental stages, and 2) incorporating strategies that identify and address the social and structural barriers to performing healthy behaviors.

4. Community Research Review Board strengthens researchers’ ability to engage communities in authentic partnerships and improves the quality and relevance of research conducted in the Jackson community.  This project will also provide technical assistance to the development of local health disparity-focused projects by advising them on how to achieve maximum synergy with existing efforts and attain stronger impacts on community health and health disparities.
