Introduction to
Community-Based Research

Individuals, their families and communities face immediate relief needs in times of disaster. There are also numerous redevelopment issues warranting attention. This is witnessed in the many recent disasters - tsunami, hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma, and the earthquake in Pakistan. All the while, famine continues to plague parts of Africa.

Arguably, social scientists and community development practitioners have a great deal to offer in understanding the context of these disasters and their impacts. Additionally, they may help to inform the recovery and redevelopment process. This work is critical, as there are many segments of the population often left out and unheard in decision making for development/redevelopment. On this basis, it is important to “amplify” the voices of these neglected and often underserved groups.

As an outcome of conversations and meetings among educators, researchers and practitioners, this website is intended to serve as a resource for people interested in conducting, applying and disseminating community-based research to understand disasters and inform redevelopment. Please check back often; it will be updated frequently.
