Homework Assignment Two
CRJ 640

A professor at Delta State University is interested in studying the socializing habits of men and women at DSU.  To accomplish this the professor developed and administered a survey containing a variety of questions relating to the amount of time students spent studying, attending athletic events, and socializing with fellow classmates.  Fourteen hundred students were involved in the analysis, the results of which are included in the data file, Binge.sav, located on the disk within your Babbie text.  Open the binge data file and conduct an independent samples t test analysis to test whether there is a statistically significant difference between the mean hours of socializing (hrssoclz) when considering the issue of gender (gender).  Upon completing the analysis answer the following questions.

1)                  What were the mean hours spent socializing for the men in this study?  What was the standard deviation for the men in the study?  What do these values mean in terms of explaining these results to a layperson?

2)                  What were the mean hours spent socializing for the women in this study?  What was the standard deviation for the women in the study?  What do these values mean in terms of explaining these results to a layperson?

3)                  In both English and Statistical language, write out the hypotheses for this study and then state the results of the analysis.

4)                  Which of the groups did better?  Why do you think these results were found?
