Course Objective: To give a good understanding of the working of the financial institutions in the US, with particular emphasis on the principles, problems and the regulatory structure surrounding the operation of commercial banks.
Text Used: Money Banking and Financial Markets by Stephen G. Checchetti. McGraw-Hill, Irwin. First Edition. ISBN: 0-07-245269-2. Other reading materials to supplement the text will be suggested. Chapters 11 thru 19 from the text will be covered. In addition specific additional materials from other sources will be covered – particularly relating to commercial banking.
Attendance: Please attend all classes. Please let me know ( e-mail, phone etc.) in advance if you are unable to attend a particular class. Automatic cut out, as per university regulations.
Tests: Grading policy:
Two mid-term tests: 150 points 90 % and above “A”
Final comprehensive test: 100 points 80% and above
Quizzes: 50 points but below 90% “B”
Out side reading 70% and above
assignments and but below 80% “C”
short papers 50 points 60% and above
but below 70% “D”
Total 350 points Below 60% “F”
Policy on cheating and plagiarism: Any dishonest act- cheating on the exam, copying from other sources in term papers and the like will not be tolerated. The first occurrence will result in a failing grade for the assignment. An “F” in the course will be awarded for the second occurrence.
