Objectives: Learning basic structures of French based on the text of the course.

Attendance:

           In addition to the university policy in the DSU Bulletin, (p.51 missing 25% of classes results in an F grade [12 cuts in a MWF class and 8 cuts in a Tues. Thurs. class]), regular attendance is an integral part of the classroom requirement of your final grade. Unexcused absences will lower the classwork grade (1 absence/1 letter grade, 2-5 absences/2 letter grades, 6 or more/no credit).

Student Responsibilities:

1.      Students will memorize the dialogs in each chapter. They should be able to recite and write each sentence of the Minimum Knowledge dialog.

2.      Students will learn the principles of the Working Knowledge section.

3.      Students will prepare assigned exercises in the Thorough Knowledge section. They should understand the structures in these sentences and be ready to produce different sentences upon request of the teacher.

4.      Students should listen to the audio tape of each chapter.

 

Procedure: We will spend one class period on each chapter. There will be a short oral and written quiz after each chapter. There will be a midterm exam and a final exam.

Grading:

Classwork, quizzes, preparation of exercises.................. 40% (classwork is 10%)

Midterm Exam...............................................................10%

Final Exam.....................................................................50%

All quizes and exams will be based on the exercises in the Thorough Knowledge sections of the chapters covered in class.

On written quizes and tests, each question will be worth 4 points. No credit will be given for miscomprehension. Other points wll be deducted for spelling and grammatical errors. Eg. A test with 40 questions would have 160 points. A = -16 points or fewer, B = -32 points or fewer, C=-48, D=-64, F=-65 and more.

Overall Grades will be calculated on the 4.0 system: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0 (below 1.0 is failing)
