Unit 14 Learning Opportunities

(1) Reading

Read chapter 15 in the Macionis text, "Population, Urbanization, and Environment."

(2) Class Discussions

Come to class and participate in the class discussions and activities.

(3) In-Class Essay

Write an essay addressing the question given in class. Try to incorporate some of the concepts from Unit 14 in your essay. Make sure that you use the vocabulary correctly and in a way that makes it clear you understand the meaning and usage of the concept. You will write your essay in a blue book on Tuesday, November 17.

(4) Weekly Quiz

On Wednesday, November 18, complete the quiz on Unit 14. The quiz will be available from 9 am until 9 pm, and you can sign on to the "Assessments" page on Blackboard and take the quiz at any time during that period. You can use any of the course materials to take the quiz, but should work alone. The quiz is timed so it will be difficult to complete the quiz if you rely on looking up every answer in your text. It is a good idea to have an outline of the important points in the chapter that you can refer to during the quiz.

(5) Discussion Questions

First, read the Thinking Globally box on p. 458, entitled "Empowering Women: The Key to Controlling Global Population Growth." Next, prepare three discussion questions pertaining to the reading. Your questions should apply concepts from the chapter to the reading, and should be general enough to elicit discussion among your classmates. Finally, submit your questions in class on Thursday, November 19. Your questions should be typed/word processed neatly, with your name, the course identifier (SOC 101), and the chapter and title at the top (e.g. "Chapter 15: Population").
