Unit 14 Goals
During this unit, you will:
- Study population, one of the drivers of social change, and environmental issues that have arisen due in part to a rapidly increasing population
- Learn about the science of demography, the study of human population change
- Consider why population has changed so dramatically in the industrial era
- Examine migration patterns, and how greater and lesser concentration of people affects their well-being
- Review the causes and consequences of a number of environmental issues
- Think about the concept of sustainability as a criterion for social well-being
Unit 14 Objectives
Upon completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- Identify and define the three demographic variables
- Explain the four stages of demographic transition, and list some of the reasons for the changes at each stage
- Identify some of the push and pull factors that lead people to leave rural areas and move to cities, and identify five issues associated with urbanization
- Describe the social conditions that have led to concern for our natural environment
- List and describe eight environmental issues, and identify their causes and consequences
- Define sustainability and identify some of the factors that influence the sustainability of a society
