Unit 13 Goals
During this unit, you will:
- Learn about two controversial social institutions in modern society: education and health care
- Understand the functions that schools play in society, and how schools are organized in different places
- Examine how schools produce and uphold social inequality
- Study some of the controversies in education in the United States
- Consider how social factors such as age, gender, social class and race influence people's health
- Examine several serious health issues in the U.S. and how they are dealt with
- Consider how health care is organized in the U.S., and some of the effects of this system of organization on people's health and people's lives
Unit 13 Objectives
Upon completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- Explain why we have schools and how schools operate
- Name and explain five functions of education and schools
- Describe three mechanisms through which schools sustain social inequality
- List and describe five controversial issues in education
- Explain how health care is provided to people in the U.S., and describe some of the variation in access and treatment
- Describe five serious health issues in the U.S., some of their consequences, and how the health care system is treating them
- Explain how the "health establishment" controls health care in the U.S.
