Unit 12 Goals
During this unit, you will:
- Learn about the two traditional institutions in society: family and religion
- Appreciate the diversity in how people organize families around the world, as nuclear or extended, monogamous or polygamous, patrilineal or matrilineal, and arranged or elective
- Examine how families are changing in the United States, and consider how these changes are functional or dysfunctional given changes in other institutions
- Learn about how religious entities are organized and some of the important functions that religion plays in society
- Examine the variation in religious organization around the United States
- Consider some issues that are reshaping religions in the U.S.
Unit 12 Objectives
Upon completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- Describe how families vary from culture to culture
- Identify and describe seven important functions of the family
- Explain some of the differences between families in different social classes, different races, and how males and females experience the family
- List some of the reasons why divorce has increased in the United States
- Identify and explain four alternative family forms that are increasing in the U.S.
- Identify and describe three important functions of religion
- Describe the characteristics of three types of religious organizations
- Distinguish New Age and Fundamentalist religious movements, and describe at least five characteristics of each
