Unit 10 Goals
During this unit, you will:
- Understand the difference between race and ethnicity, and learn how racial categories come about;
- Examine how racial discrimination emerges and begins to structure interaction between people of different racial groups;
- Learn how some forms of discrimination become institutionalized and continue without any overt prejudice;
- Study the characteristics of various racial and ethnic groups in the United States.
Unit 10 Objectives
Upon completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- Explain how race is a social and cultural concept;
- Define majority, dominant and minorty group;
- Distinguish between prejudice and discrimination, and describe how descrimination occurs;
- Explain how institutional discrimination can perpetuate racial inequities;
- Characterize four approaches to addressing racial tensions and disparities;
- Name at least seven racial groups in the U.S. and describe distinguishing characteristics of each group.
