Unit 8 Goals
During this unit, you will:
- Extend the concept of stratification to understand how nations are ranked in a global hierarchy;
- Study the characteristics of high-income, middle-income and low-income countries;
- Examine global poverty and see how poor people live, where poverty is concentrated and why poverty persists;
- Understand the history of international development, through the modernization, dependency and globalization eras.

Upon completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- List five characteristics that distinguish high-income, middle-income and low-income nations;
- Identify where global wealth and poverty are concentrated;
- Characterize the poorest regions of the world, both in industrialized regions and in developing regions;
- Describe how poverty affects different groups of people, such as children and women;
- Name three factors that contribute to global inequality and explain how these link high-income and low-income countries.
