The fourth annual ROMEA conference will be held at Delta State University on October 6, 2008. This conference is sponsored by the Teaching Excellence Committee and the Student Engagement Champions at Delta State University. All who are interested in issues related to teaching in higher education are invited to submit proposals for possible inclusion in the program. Abstracts for papers, workshops, and posters will be considered if received by July 25, 2008. All submissions
should be sent through email to the ROMEA Committee at
ROMEA@deltastate.edu. Abstracts may be attached to the email
message as an MS Word Document or pasted into the body of the email
message. Details regarding how submissions should be formatted are
included below under the respective headers. All submissions will
be peer-reviewed for possible inclusion in the program. Presenters
will be notified by August 1, 2008 as to whether their
presentations have been accepted. I. PAPERS Paper presentations have one presenter with 20 minutes allowed for the presentation and discussion. Papers will be grouped into sessions with similar topics by the conference organizers. Papers may cover a wide range of topics such as: scholarship of teaching and learning, position papers, reviews of the literature, classroom innovations, effective teaching strategies, assessing student learning outcomes, or the use of technology in the classroom. II. WORKSHOPS Workshops encourage audience participation, and provide demonstrations and/or illustrations. The amount of time allotted to workshops is either 25 minutes or 50 minutes depending on the topic and program needs. III. POSTERS The poster
session is an informal method for presenters to share favorite
teaching activities or classroom demonstrations. Presenters are
encouraged to share hints about what they have found to be effective
in the classroom to increase student participation, attendance, or
enthusiasm, as well as methods to increase content knowledge in a
given subject. Posters should contain the purpose of the
activity/method, a brief description of the activity/method, and the
outcome of the activity/method.
During the poster session, the presenting author should be available
to answer questions and discuss their teaching activity/method with
interested attendees. WORD LIMITS: Paper abstracts and workshop abstracts should be 100 to 250 words in length. Poster abstracts should be 50 to 150 words in length. TOPICS: Appropriate topics may address aspects of teaching and learning, the science or psychology of learning, methods for incorporating writing into a course, technology, student motivation and engagement, faculty issues, portfolio building, and mentoring. Successful topics should be applicable across disciplines, and not limited to one particular academic discipline.
